The Write Life

Family Ties - Finding My Theme

Today's blog post is something a bit different. I have been unable to write the last couple of days. I wanted to understand more in depth about my writing. I have been doing some soul searching in order to help myself past the block I am currently struggling with.

After a bit of deep introspection, I finally figured out that family is one of my main themes in writing. Sounds simple right? But it's not. It's how people create families, outside of being blood related. That Richard Bach quote I discovered and wrote about in my year in review post kind of clued me in.

I went back and looked through some of my fanfiction, same thing, it was there as well. Did I really just say that? My...fanfiction? I did. Shhh...could we keep that on the down low please. Yes I own that I wrote fanfiction, it's where I studied the basics. Enough said. No you don't need to know what genre or fandom.

Anyway back to the matter at hand, families. It's interesting how people meet and come together in the sense that they create a family bond while not blood related. This is a theme through out most of my stories.

So my mission for you should you choose to accept it is...think about what your themes are, in and amongst your writing. It is interesting what it will tell you about yourself. If you are open feel free to share yours and comment. I hope this helps you guys as much as it helped me.

When I force it, and try to write what I want to write, my themes are scattered across the board but when I write what my heart wants to say then like you, the main theme in my writing is family. There are pages and pages of writing and short stories that I don't share and in those I've often written about what a family is after it is broken and attempts to recover, or when it's broken before it starts. I think what we write tends to be the theme of our life more or less, the thing that we try to figure out, but can't so we fictionalize it and hope to understand it in that context.

I loved your post and am so glad your few days off from writing brought you here ;)

Callie - You really should share some, it does the heart good. For me its not so much figuring it out as just making myself happy. Does that make sense?

Diane - Thank you, I'm really glad you enjoyed it.
