Talking Titles - Say Something

So here is a topic that no one ever really writes or speaks about. Your title. You should, because that can make or break your story or article. I am going to share for those out here in Writer Land, how I go about the process.

Now I mainly write fiction, other than these blog posts, so for me it all depends on the story. I really enjoyed my fan fiction. The reason being I was able to title each chapter and could have fun with it.

As an example, in one story I had a chapter called "Miko's Creation & Makeover Madness." In another story I had a chapter titled, "Clothes, Makeup, & Heels Oh My!". It was enjoyable because it allowed me to set the tone for each chapter, riff on other things, and just be playful. I had a story that I titled, "Wishing You Were Mine,", which was a big element in the story. My intent was to draw the reader in with these titles as well.

Now with actual original stories, titling each chapter is not such a necessity. The process is somewhat similar. I like for my title to sometimes to tie into the very end of the story. Or, sometimes it may derive from an element within the story that helps set the tone.

As you have all read, I titled, "Possession is Nine Tenths of the Law", just because it was a play on the word possession and a bit lighthearted. That was kind of my intent for the story.

So I hope as you read or write, think about the title, and what message you are sending or receiving. Feel free to share your process if you would like. Pay attention because Friday may see a special short, after all we all need a little romance, right?

I'm a long way off needing a title for my first book, but in the last year of blogging I have often struggled to come up with a title that has the right tone. I look back now at some of the titles I used and go "what was I thinking?" Coming up with a book title? Sigh...nobody said writing was easy (smile). Thanks for the post, Crystal.

I have a book in constant editing. The first thing an editor or reader always says is, "Great title!" then they get to writing style. I think you have something with the title discussion. You need to remember it and have good associations with it for a title to work.

Diane - I can relate. I've done that too. Thank you for taking the time to read it. :)

Kari - Yes exactly. It is important. Thanks. :)
