This article "Oppulance on TV: Escapist or Clueless?" caught my attention. Roger Catlin of the Hartford Courant, asks some pertinent questions. One of the replies bothered me enough that I had to post this.
Dawn Ostroff, entertainment president at the CW, compares it to the days of “Dynasty” and “Dallas.”
“Those shows were all very popular back in a time when there was a very similar financial climate in the country, ” she says. “When the country goes through times like these ... having entertainment be escapist is what our viewers look for.”
What viewers I wonder? Why would financially-drained people want to watch rich people? Call me crazy, but that is not a form of escapism. Torture is what I would call it. When I am choosing between food for my children and gas, the last thing I am going to enjoy watching is others wasting money.
You wouldn't believe the strong urge I have to email Dawn Ostroff and share my thoughts. I would love to see who their target audience really is. You know they have statistical data for this.
