The Write Life

Seducing hearts, one story at a time, Author - Crystal R. Martin

I’m active in different communities on the internet. I’m a witch, and I pay attention to politics. This trend I’m seeing happens to be where these communities intersect lately. People throwing around the buzz word woke. Politicians and people in the media use it. Even published nonfiction authors are misappropriating the word. They’re falling back on lazy language.

Witch Foot, the author, in her new book, Spellcrafting Companion For Physical Witchcraft;; An A – Z Guide of Magical Ingredients, (Amazon, Independent, 2023) uses this approach. She writes, “Other people’s opinions about how you practice do not matter. New Age “woke” witches cannot comprehend that you can still learn from someone you dislike. You can still be educated by someone whose views differ from your own.”

Here is my question. If you are trying to persuade your readership of an idea, how does insulting part of your own community serve you? It doesn’t. You lose your credibility when you use lazy language to insult your audience.

“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”  Inigo Montoya.

Reiner, R. (Director). (1987). The Princess Bride. [Film; Theater]. Act III Communications.
